Catanzaro is known as the City of the Three V’s, referring to three characteristics that have historically set it apart: the Wind, the Velvet, and Vitaliano, its patron saint. The strong sea breezes influence its climate, making it quite windy. The artisanal production of silk and textiles brought Catanzaro international renown in the silk industry until the 1800s. Saint Vitaliano is the city’s patron saint, and his relics were sent here as a token of appreciation for the city’s hospitality toward Pope Callistus II.
